Imagine having a large hard disk that you want to sell. In order to do this, you will need to format it and erase any personal data stored on the disk .The problem is that when deleting a file or folder using the Windows deletion feature, or even when formatting a partition, the data is not actually gone, but just hidden into the hard disk's clusters. Using recovery software, anyone can easily retrieve and recover that deleted data. In this way, a new hard disk owner may have access to all your personal passwords, bank accounts and other related information. In this situation, you will need to wipe the hard disk, in order to make the deleted data impossible to retrieve.

For this task, you could use the Active@ KillDisk application. The program does exactly what the names suggests, it destroys all the data stored on a hard disk, for making it impossible to recover, no matter what recovery software is used. The installation procedure of Active@ KillDisk can be completed with ease, as a couple of mouse clicks are enough to get the process finished. After running the program, it will automatically scan the hard disk partitions and will list them in the graphical interface.

At this point, the user has two choices, either to wipe the free space of a partition and to retrieve all unused clusters or to kill a partition, by deleting all the data stored on it completely. No matter what method is used, the data will not be recoverable. In case the user wants to wipe the system partition, he should create a bootdisk and run the process before Windows is loaded. Thus, one will ensure that all the data is completely wiped, even the files that are normally used by the operating system. A log file is created by Active@ KillDisk after each operation and the user can easily save it, for later analysis.

Pros

It can easily wipe all the free space from a partition, making the data impossible to recover. Besides that, it can remove any data from a hard disk partition. What's more, it creates a complete log file after each hard disk operation, helping you see in detail what the program has been doing.

Cons

There is no way to recover data if the user wipes it by mistake. Active@ KillDisk allows you to remove any file and folder from a hard disk and also to wipe free space, making all deleted data impossible to recover.
